Governor Adeleke Appoints Himself as Commissioner for Works Amid Legal Challenge

Osun State security & governance

In July 2023, Governor Ademola Adeleke made a bold move by appointing himself as the Commissioner for Works while inaugurating 25 other commissioners in Osogbo. His deputy, Kola Adewusi, was also assigned the role of Commissioner for Sports and Special Needs. The decision was met with legal resistance from the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which argued that the move violated Section 183 of the Nigerian Constitution, prohibiting a sitting governor from holding another executive office.

The APC took the matter to the Osun State High Court, demanding a declaration that the appointments were unconstitutional. Despite the controversy, Governor Adeleke defended his decision, citing his commitment to ensuring effective infrastructure development.

> “I seek a very responsive government that listens and satisfies the wishes of the people. So, your goal must be real service to the people. I value honesty and integrity in public service. You must be above board. Corrupt conduct will be heavily sanctioned,” Adeleke stated during the swearing-in ceremony.

The Ministry of Works and Transportation remains a crucial department in Osun, overseeing road construction, building maintenance, and drainage systems. With Governor Adeleke personally handling the ministry, his administration is expected to prioritize key infrastructure projects across the state.

Davido Speaks on Osun State Security & Commissioner of Police

On February 17, 2025, Nigerian superstar Davido, son of Governor Adeleke’s elder brother, issued a public statement regarding security concerns in Osun State. Initially, Davido expressed deep frustration over the rising violence and blamed the Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Umar Abba. However, upon further review, he acknowledged that the security issues were broader than just the Commissioner’s role.http://punchng.com

> “The bloodshed of today infuriated me so much that I heaped all the blame on the Commissioner of Police,” Davido wrote.

“I now see that the issue is more than that of the Commissioner of Police or other security chiefs. The needless killings of today angered me so deeply that I thought it should have been nipped in the bud.”

Despite his initial frustration, Davido commended the efforts of the Osun State security agencies, recognizing their dedication in handling the situation. He urged them to intensify their work to maintain peace, especially as the February 22, 2025, local government elections approach.

> “We must work to ensure that the local government election scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd is held peacefully. Achieving this will be a crowning glory not just for politicians but for security chiefs, including the Osun State Commissioner of Police.”

Davido concluded by wishing the Commissioner of Police and other security commanders success in their efforts to manage the security challenges in Osun State. His statement has since gained widespread attention, with many Nigerians appreciating his willingness to use his influence to advocate for peace and justice.
